Who is a Best Employee?

 

The best employee has a set of unique characteristics in addition to explicit work related knowledge. While different jobs require different skill sets, you can be pretty sure that all good workers have a detectable resemblance in their mindsets.

Most of the organizations evaluate their employees on monthly basis and award one among them as the “Best employee of the month”.  Some companies follow scientific methods to identify the star performers and some just follow their Managers’ recommendations. Even though this initiative is to motivate the human capital, most of the time it ends up motivating one employee and demotivating the majority. First of all, let us try to find out the general criteria adopted by most of the organizations to identify their best employee,

Recommendation from Supervisors

This is the traditional method and almost all of the organizations where I have worked follow this method. Every month the supervisors are advised to submit their recommendations with supporting evidences and the recommendations are evaluated by a committee and the winner is declared. The disadvantage with this method is that the prejudices and biases of a supervisor can affect his or her judging capability. This can end up by an undeserving employee getting the award thus causing injustice to a really deserving employee. Most of the supervisors are not trained enough to overcome their prejudices and biases.

Feedback from the clients

This is a method followed by Service industries because client satisfaction is very important for survival of these organizations.  Some organizations request the clients to nominate the best employee and some companies consider only client appreciation letters/feedback for calculating the points. Depending entirely on client feedback will not help the organizations because the client will be able to give feedback about only those employees who are in direct contact with them. Example: In hospitality industry the waiters and front office staff are always in touch with the clients whereas a dishwasher who works in the cleaning area may not meet the client at all.

Feedback from the coworkers or colleagues

Each employee of the organization will be asked to nominate one name except his, for the monthly award and whoever gets the highest votes will be considered for the award. This method is also not free from demerits. The employees are also not free from bias and prejudice and this can affect their judgment. Also, those employees who are very good in influencing others tend to get the highest votes.

 

 

Individual contributions of employees

Contribution of employees will be evaluated to find out the monetary gains achieved by the organization due to concerned employee’s individual contribution. In this method those employees whose contributions have helped the organizations in achieving financial gains get award even if the employee lacks behavioral traits like attitude, interpersonal relationship etc.

Even though a supervisor’s recommendation plays a significant part in identifying the awardee, my current organization follows below criteria to find out the deserving employee.

1.            The nominated employees should have practiced our company’s core values in the locations. Our core values are: Team spirit, Service Spirit and Spirit of Progress. The supervisors should highlight this through cases where in the nominated employee has proved that he or she has lived these core values.

2.            The nominated employee should have displayed below qualities in order to get nominated:

 

Interpersonal Skills

•             Displays a helpful, cooperative and positive attitude towards superiors and co-workers

•             Consistently friendly and available to others

•             Uses effective listening skills

•             Has a team player attitude

•             Voluntarily assists co-workers in order to complete important department projects

 

Work Performance

•             Knowledgeable of company policy and procedure

•             High overall quality of performance

•             Accurately completes work assignments on time

•             Controls high stress situations tactfully and calmly

•             Takes initiative

•             Requires little supervision

•             Willingness to learn and take on new responsibilities

 

 

Personal Traits

•             Maintains an appropriate and neat personal appearance and dress

•             Professional demeanor

•             Conscientious, honest, hard-working

•             Integrity, on and off the job

 The Best employees are worthy of appreciation. It's every manager's and leader's job to identify who they are and to recognize them. According to Globoforce, the No. 1 reason most Americans leave their jobs is that they don’t feel appreciated. In fact, 65 percent of people who have been surveyed said that they didn’t get recognition for the good work performed by them the previous year. Sodexo I Teyseer, my current company not only recognizes the awardees with gifts, but also recognizes those employees who were nominated but couldn’t win the race with appreciation letters signed by our General Manager. This boosts the spirit of healthy competition among our employees and they are highly motivated to perform.
